We
were set up in 1955 by the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust to
provide a medical service to the industry growing up in Harlow
New Town. This pre-dated the existence of a District General
Hospital in the area. Initially the service operated out of a
temporary building donated by Wimpy.
The first proper
building was Edinburgh House opened 28/10/58. This was replaced
in the nineties by Stephen Taylor House opened on 26/2/92 by the
Lord Lieutenant of Essex Admiral Sir Andrew Lewis KCB, JP. It
was named after the eminent occupational physician Lord Stephen
Taylor who had had a close association with the service. He had
a vision of a small facility in every industrial town. The
Association of Group Occupational Health Services grew out of
this. |
